Between Cushing and the Saint Croix River that borders Minnesota, lies an area affectionately known as "The Barrens". This area is about ten miles wide and 15-20 miles north and south. This area is very sparsely populated (except for the numerous hunting shacks). The ground is flat and sandy. Jack pines and scrub oak are the main plants in this area. Sand burrs add additional enjoyment to your visit there. The Barrens is not a good place to get lost or stuck as traffic is light. There have even been legends of a Bigfoot sighting in the Barrens. The police say it was a hoax, but who knows? Despite its lack of appeal (to most people other than hunters), the Barrens is valuable in its uniqueness and its abundance of wildlife.
